Earlier today, Steam users who logged into their accounts discovered something bizarre. According to players, their homepages in some cases were set to the wrong language and when they looked at the account information section of their accounts, they found other users’ information – that includes email addresses and purchase histories.
A few hours ago, the company shut down the Steam store temporarily to address the issue. Everyone’s account information seems to be accurate now, but Valve has yet to release a statement explaining what happened or how many users were affected. One Kotaku writer reports that the account they were able to access was actually using Steam Guard, Valve’s tool that prevents unauthorized account access.
