Which The Last of Us Game Should I Play First?

June 15, 2022 by Matt Cook

Here’s what you need to know.

Fans of Sony’s The Last of Us franchise were pleasantly surprised to see The Last of Us Part 1 announced at this year’s Summer Games Fest. Well, mostly surprised. The original game won more awards than can reasonably be counted. The second game was similarly successful, and it has all led to a new HBO TV show based on the games. So it’s undoubtedly one of Sony’s most important franchises. However, what is definitely surprising to many people is that this remake exists instead of, say, The Last of Us 3 or something else new in the universe. After all, The Last of Us was already remastered for the PlayStation 4 after originally being released on the PlayStation 3. So the fact that the game is now coming to the PlayStation 5 (and PC for the first time) is bound to confuse some people. So naturally, many people have questions. Questions like, which The Last of Us game should I play first?

Which The Last of Us game should I play first?

With the upcoming release of The Last of Us Part 1, there are now three versions of the first game to choose from. Players who want the absolute highest quality graphics and PS5 enhancements and don’t mind paying for it should definitely wait for The Last of Us Part 1 to release on September 2.

However, The Last of Us Remastered is still an incredible game, and it can be played right now. It can even be played for free for those who are subscribed to PlayStation Plus with a PS5 or for those who have the Extra/Premium tier of the service. PS5 and PS4 Pro owners can already benefit from a locked 60 FPS in the remaster, so for those who prioritize frame rate, it’s a good option.

Of course, there’s also the original PS3 version of The Last of Us. Naughty Dog really pushed the limits of what the PS3 was capable of when it released The Last of Us. So retro fans who want to see the PS3 in its prime could do worse than playing The Last of Us.
