The sequel to the 2019 movie Joker is finally shaping up. Less than a month after writer-director Todd Phillips announced completing the script of Joker 2, a popular name is in talks to play one of the major characters of the story. Lady Gaga is reportedly in discussion for the role of Harley Quinn.
The full name of this sequel is Joker: Folie à deux, which means ‘shared psychosis’ in French. This title hints that the Joker will no longer be alone. In this new movie, the Joker could meet the love of his life, Harley Quinn. Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as the Joker, which won him an Oscar for Best Actor in 2020.
The original Joker movie was a box-office success. The darker tone of this movie and Phoenix’s interpretation of the Joker’s mental illness received great reviews from both press and spectators. Joker grossed over $1 billion, becoming the first and only R-rated movie to do so.
There is still very little information available about Joker: Folie à deux. Todd Phillips has been co-writing the script with Scott Silver, just like for the original movie. This sequel would reportedly be a musical, and Lady Gaga could play Harley Quinn.
The abusive relationship between the Joker and his psychiatrist sidekick Harley Quinn has already been explored in various media. The latest representation of Joker and Harley Quinn dates back to 2021 with The Suicide Squad, starring Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix could offer an interpretation of these characters way different than what we previously saw in theaters.
