The Nintendo Switch has been doing very well ever since its launch in 2017, and one of the biggest reasons for its success is not just the 1st party games that have dominated just about every time they’ve come out, but the 3rd party support that they’ve gotten as well. Ubisoft, Square Enix, Bethesda (for a time) and others have tried to make the Nintendo Switch their home for either ports or exclusive titles. That includes Platinum Games, who apparently are hard at work on a certain sequel…named Astral Chain 2.
This comes from a rumor on Twitter (see above), and while that’s not the most definitive of proof, there is some logic behind the game being made. The main reason is that the game launched in 2019, and it sold over a million units, which Platinum Games themselves said was “exceeding expectations” for the title. And the game did end on a kind of cliffhanger, so if they wanted to expand that world, making Astral Chain 2 would be the best way to do it.
The original Astral Chain was easily one of the most unique games put on the Switch, because not only did it have an anime feel to it despite being a 3D game (complete with anime-style intro sequence), but it has the classic over the top (and a bit complex) combat system that Platinum likes to play with, AND, it had huge detective elements.
While these in theory shouldn’t blend well together, they actually worked rather brilliantly, and thus the game got very high review scores from both fans and critics, and as a result of that, sold very well. No doubt fans would love to dive into this game world again and see all that it has to offer.
We’ll just have to wait and see if the rumors are true.
