Epic Games, lately known for their popular game engine Unreal Engine 4, released a demo for Oculus Touch, Oculus’ VR “controller,” called Bullet Train today at Oculus Connect 2, Oculus’s own developer conference.
The demo shows first-person shooter gameplay that is reminiscent of light gun shooters you would find at Dave and Busters today, however, this is indicative of the problem with any virtual reality-based game: it doesn’t demo well unless you’re the one playing it. One can imagine that actually playing Bullet Train while wearing the Oculus Rift headset and the Oculus Touch controllers will be an incredibly immersive experience, but a minute-long gameplay trailer doesn’t do well to telegraph that.
Earlier this month, Epic Games also released another VR demo called Showdown to anyone using Unreal Engine 4 (which is free as of March this year). Showdown was originally shown off at the Oculus Connect developer’s conference a year ago, but Epic has since made it available to the public. While Bullet Train was designed to take advantage of Oculus Touch, Showdown can be used with Oculus Rift Developer’s Kit 2, PlayStation VR, and HTC Vive SteamVR.
Epic Games hosted a livestream earlier today on Twitch (the archive of which can be viewed here) where they talked more about Bullet Train, among other things.
