If you’ve been paying attention to the CW as of late, a lot of things are changing on the channel, and not necessarily for the better. As a LOT of its shows have been canned, including fan-favorites like Legends of Tomorrow, and new shows like Naomi. Riverdale was announced today to be ending with Season 7 (much to the joy of the cast and haters of the show), and The Flash (one of the last remaining DC Comics shows on the channel) is presumed to be ending with the next season. But when is The Flash Season 9 coming?
Well…ahead of its Upfronts today, the CW revealed their schedule for the next “season” and they revealed that The Flash Season 9 won’t arrive until 2023. Now, while that may sound bad (and it technically is), there might be a reasonable explanation for this.
Up until the pandemic, the CW/DC Comics series were doing 20 episodes plus every season, and that meant there were long gaps between some episodes so that they could get done filming, have the VFX done, and so on. This past “season” on the various DC Comics shows, they would premiere, do a few episodes, take a few weeks off, and so on and so forth, making it really hard for fans to keep up with all that’s going on.
As such, by delaying it until 2023 (especially if this is the last season), they might be able to ensure a more straightforward run (pun intended) through the episodes to help make sure that everyone watches it.
At present, there isn’t confirmation that this upcoming season will be the last, but given the landscape of the CW in terms of them scrapping shows left and right and apparently wanting to be sold, if it is the end, they’ll at least be able to prepare for that.
