It has been 13 years since the original film was released, and after years of wondering “will there be a sequel, when will it come out?”, a trailer for Avatar 2 has been released in preparation for the film’s release later in the year.
Officially titled Avatar: The Way of Water, this sequel has been one of the most anticipated films of all time – and that’s not us even exaggerating either. The original Avatar is still the highest-grossing film of all time (not bad for a 13-year-old film) and bearing in mind the influx of Marvel films that have hit the industry in that time, this feat is a mightily impressive one.
Directed once again by James Cameron, Avatar 2 is set more than a decade after the events of the first film and focuses on the story of the Sully family, following them through a whole host of trouble that is coming their way. This family must go to extreme lengths to keep each other safe, whilst fighting enemy forces all in the name of trying to stay alive. Watch the trailer below to get a sense of what’s going to happen.
As you can see from the trailer, Jake and Neytiri have had a child in the time since the first film, but they also seem to have grown close to a human child who must wear a special mask in order to survive on the planet. It is unsure how Earth has reacted to the news that Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) has been adopted into the Na’vi tribe – basically becoming their savior in the war – and then swiftly transferring his consciousness into the body of his human/Na’vi hybrid avatar so he could start a new life with his chosen mate Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). But going off the trailer, it seems that the tribe must fight for their lives in order to keep their paradise a… well, a paradise.
The trailer also shows how visually stunning this film will look, with the CGI and the overall aesthetic of the first film still living rent-free in most fans’ heads. Avatar 2 will be released on December 16th, 2022, which gives you just enough time to rewatch the trailer over and over again.
