Darksiders' Joe Madureira's next game is Battle Chasers: Nightwar, a 2D/3D hybrid which recalls traditional JRPGs.
The overworld and battle backgrounds are 2D paintings, while the characters and combat takes places in 3D. While in dungeons, 3D characters travel through isometric levels which Polygon says "look, somehow, flat and multidimensional at the same time."
The site adds, "Overworlds and dungeons are old concepts, but the roaming bands of monsters and the dungeon's traps are examples of modern sensibilities."
Encounters aren't random, with players able to foresee upcoming attacks or run from them. There are also traps which players should avoid but can also use to lure enemies to their deaths.
Many of the complex systems of JRPGs have been overhauled to make them simpler, with the intention of bringing new players into the genre.
