Destiny: The Taken King’s New Crucible Multiplayer Modes Revealed

August 18, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Rift is similar to CTF while Mayhem may not be around forever.

Destiny developer Bungie has revealed two new Crucible multiplayer modes which will be introduced to the game in The Taken King expansion.

In an interview with Game Informer, design lead Lars Bakken announced that the first will be called 'Rift'. This 6v6 mode is being introduced to address fan requests for a new objective-style multiplayer. Rift is said to be akin to neutral bomb assault, being a twist on traditional capture-the-flag gameplay.

When a match starts, an object called Spark is placed at the map's centre and your goal is to transport the object to your enemy's base to score. Even if you lose, you'll still earn rewards and the amount of time you have to carry the spark is limited – take too long and it'll blow up and kill you.

Bakken explained the differences by saying traditional CTF modes featured in other games are often too "binary" and "punitive."

Crucuble's second new mode is called 'Mayhem' and sees ammo, grenades, melee moves, and super abilities recharge "very fast." Bakken says this mode feels like a "party game" and he hopes people play for fun and to blow off steam rather than taking it as seriously as they might in other modes.

Mayhem may not be there forever, with Bakken saying Bungie wants to gather feedback from players before deciding whether or not to keep it.

The developer will also introduce a permanent Elimination playlist, Trials of Osiris' 3v3 hardcore mode, which was previously only available to play during a limited window.

"I think players told us pretty quickly with Trials when we gave them Elimination as a rotating mode, the first posts that were popping up were, 'Oh my God, just make it permanent, you a**holes!' 'Just do it; we want to play it all the time.' So that's what we're going to try," Bakken commented.

Destiny: The Taken King launches on September 15th for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One and brings sweeping changes to leveling, light levels, ghosts, story, and more.
