CD Projekt RED has spoken out about The Witcher 3 mods on consoles, but they also had a lot to say about the mod tools that they are releasing for PC.
These mod tools aren’t going to be as intuitive to use as Super Mario Maker, but they go farther too. While they make creating mods easier, they are intended for gamers who already have experience with modding software. Now, they do give modders access to the game files, such that the process of extracting, compiling, and decompiling resources is completely covered.
So, these tools won’t just allow you to make cosmetic changes. You will be able to modify UI and even gameplay mechanics, and the publishing process has been streamlined so that other players can use these mods the moment they’re out.
Of course, CD Projekt RED is supportive of the mod community, and in fact claim that they got some ideas from The Witcher 2 mods that they applied on The Witcher 3.
And finally, the big question. CD Projekt RED is looking into ways to give console players mod tools, but they make no promises right now. They don’t want to partition console gamers away from getting to use the mods, so this is definitely something they want, and not just an optional thing. They have already talked to first parties (AKA Sony and Microsoft) and investigating what approaches to take.
