When it comes to characters who have been around for a long time, such as Lara Croft, you sometimes struggle to go and create new and compelling tales for the character. Or, when you reboot the character, you tell new takes on ones that have gone before much to the chagrin of some. For Tomb Raider, it is getting a new game from Crystal Dynamics, the team who made the “reboot trilogy” with great success.
However, one of their former writers has a simple request for the next title…make it about Lara and not her dad:
“We had a really fun time evolving her character, so I would like to see probably less father issues,” Rhianna Pratchett said. “And that’s coming from me!”
She continued: “I like seeing her striking out on her own and really taking some joy in what she does. Because when we wrote the reboot game, she was really on her way to becoming a tomb raider. So she was like proto-Tomb Raider. And all the the traits that you associate with Tomb Railer like tenaciousness, bravery, resourcefulness, were kind of bubbling to the surface with her.
I want to see that full fruition, I want to see the sassy one liners and things that I would have loved to have written. But, you know, she wasn’t at that stage yet, she didn’t have the confidence yet. I think that the trilogy went down really well with fans, so it’s gonna be exciting to see what they do next.”
Ironically enough, she’s not the only one to mention this recently, comic writer (who has written Lara Croft in the past) Gail Simone had a similar statement on Twitter not too long ago. So clearly both these writers feel that the best way to advance Lara…is to focus on her moving past her father, and that could open up many story ideas.
