Were you hoping to see a Minecraft sequel? Mojang hasn’t even considered it, but we think you will find the reason for this to be pretty sensible.
Mojang CEO Jonas Martensson shared this statement:
First of all, there's been no discussions about Minecraft 2 at the moment. I can't promise forever there'll never be a Minecraft 2, but for the foreseeable future there won't be.
He then explained that the company sees Minecraft as a platform they can just keep on updating, for as long as fans will want it. In fact, he sees the company continuing to support Minecraft until 2020.
Of course, even in the case of games that were planned out like this, chances are more likely that the game will eventually get a sequel, than go the way of World of Warcraft, and for good reason. It simply makes more sense to update with a sequel, so the developers can make a clean break from the last game’s tech, and possibly its tropes and other idiosyncrasies. A completely new game, a la Doom, means a new engine, new renditions of characters, even new ways of telling the story.
With this in mind, the choice not to make a Minecraft sequel is kind of conservative, but Mojang is innovating in other ways. While they are commiserating options to bring the game to Nintendo platforms, they are pursuing the push to bring the game to the education sector.
