Falcon and The Winter Soldier was a very key part of the Disney+ lineup of shows, it was one of the first unveiled, and meant to headline the service in many ways as a true direct extension of the MCU. WandaVision would eventually come first, but this show needed to keep the momentum going, and its “6-hour action movie” premise did just that. Including setting up Captain America 4 with Sam Wilson now being the man in the stars and stripes. However, despite all it did, edits have now been done on the show.
This was caught by eagle-eyed viewers who noticed that key scenes depicting a lot of violence were altered suddenly.
The first edit is visible in a shot of Hydra scientist Wilfred Nagel’s dead body, which is no longer splattered with blood. Nagel’s eyes are also closed and the blood has been removed from his mouth. The second edit comes later in Episode 3 when Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes and Sharon Carter go up against a band of bounty hunters. Bucky originally pinned one of the combatants to a shipping container by hurling a pipe through her shoulder but now the pipe glances off her chest. This causes a continuity error, as Bucky’s opponent is later shown pinioned against the container.
So yeah, they did that. But why? Many are speculating it has to do with the recent integration with The Defenders under the new TV-MA banner they have. They likely didn’t want Falcon and The Winter Soldier to be put into that due to its “intense violence” and thus they did the editing. One has to wonder though if it is the right move though not just for continuity errors, but because it honestly sends the wrong message to future projects.
We’ll just have to see what comes from this.
