Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software has confirmed that the upcoming game in the Harry Potter universe is single-player focused and won’t have multiplayer. The studio confirmed in an FAQ on the game’s website that it won’t be including multiplayer of any kind. The studio described the game as an open-world, single-player, action RPG.
Q: Is Hogwarts Legacy an original story?
A: Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world, single-player, action role-playing videogame (RPG) set in the 1800s wizarding world. The story has players experiencing life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry like never before, as they live the unwritten and embark on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world.

Further driving the point home, the studio addressed the question of multiplayer in Hogwarts Legacy head-on and also ruled out co-op.

A: Hogwarts Legacy is a single player experience and does not have online or co-op gameplay.

As confirmed last week, the studio also reaffirmed that there will be no microtransactions in Hogwarts Legacy.

Although multiplayer may not have been expected, it could have been a cool element to the game. Since Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world game there could have been lots of opportunities for fun co-op mulitplayer. Especially since the game seems to rely on players having companions with them. Maybe that’s something that will make its way to a future game. However, don’t expect to see wizarding PvP multiplayer in this type of game anytime soon.
Hogwarts Legacy will be released later this year. The current release window is “holiday 2022.” The game will be released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
