The co-founder and CEO of Valve, Gabe Newell has been spotted personally delivering Steam Decks to customers in the Seattle area. Some lucky people who were at the right place at the right time were even given their very own Steam Deck free of charge.
Redditor ‘bitfiddler0’ received what they described as a “spammy looking email” a few days ago saying that their Steam Deck had arrived early and would be delivered the next day. They were hesitant that the handheld PC would actually show up but were hopeful. The Reddit user went on to say, “I told my wife to watch for deliveries while I went on a full-day ski trip with friends. The ‘delivery guy’ comes and wife opens the door. He asks ‘Is Mike (not real name) home?’ She says ‘no but you can leave the package with me….. and what’s with the camera crew?’ Little did she know that the ‘delivery guy’ was Gabe Newell”
The Redditor said the Valve CEO was “a super cool and down-to-earth guy though. He said to email him if she has any feedback (to which my wife replied ‘OK, but what’s your name again?’)” As can be expected, bitfiddler0 greatly regretted being out of the house that day saying, “Anyway, excuse me while I go bang my head against a wall for missing this whole experience.” The picture above was posted along with the story to give proof of its validity.
Another Reddit user described a similar experience saying, “Saw a camera crew going up to my neighbor’s house while I was loading stuff into my truck. My roommate recognized the guy being followed as Gaben, I didn’t believe him, our other roommate then verified it was indeed Gabe.” Going on to say, “After delivering my neighbor’s Deck, we yelled ‘Hi Gabe!’. At which point he asked how many were living in the house, then he went back to his van and grabbed us each a Deck. Was also filmed receiving ours so I assume these will be used in some promo or online. Very cool day.”
The Steam Deck officially launch on February 25, although many fans are still waiting for their preorders to arrive. Ordering one from the Steam website right now says to expect delivery “after Q2 2022”.
