Minecraft Passes 20 Million Units Sold on PC, Mac

June 30, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

A game that seems will last a lifetime.

The incredibly popular Minecraft has now sold more than 20 million units on Windows PC and Mac, according to the game’s official stat tracker.

The official website’s stat tracker lists the sales of the PC/Mac version of the game, which currently sits at 20,005,600 total units sold and 10,354 in the last 24 hours.

Minecraft was released in its alpha stage for PC on May 17, 2009 and saw a full version release two and a half years late on November 18, 2011. Versions for Android, iOS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita, and Windows Phone have also been released since then, the most recent of which was the Windows Phone version on December 10, 2014.

Last September, Microsoft purchased developer Mojang and Minecraft along with it for $2.5 billion. Though Microsoft is the producer of the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, the company has no intention of halting support of Minecraft on other platforms such as the PlayStation family of consoles. The purchase also resulted in notable members of Mojang departing the company, including Markus “Notch” Persson, who, at the time, wrote:

“I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.”

“I love you. All of you,” he continued. “Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I can’t be responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.

“It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity.”
