Gamers immersed in the indie scene are no stranger to Cave Story by now. The title, which has been available on the PC, Linux and Mac platforms has been available for free, for years. It's even been ported onto WiiWare and additional platforms.
It's since been re-released as Cave Story+ on the Mac App Store [Link] by developer Nicalis.
If you've already played the original game, you might be wondering why you should bother with the new version, which goes for $9.99. I asked myself the same question. Thorough research—or at least five minutes of Googling—shows that Cave Story+ includes updated (improved) graphics, new music present in the WiiWare version of the game, and an all new Wind Fortress level designed by the game's creator, Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. The game is also slated to see additional content updates, free of charge.
The new Wind Fortress area includes new monsters and a bunch of new things to do, making it a worthwhile experience for anyone, especially players of the original game.
According to the developer, a Steam version of Cave Story+ is planned for release soon, giving PC players the same opportunity to experience the new content.
