VG247 has published a new interview with Dark Souls 3 director Hidetaka Miyazaki, in which he discusses the game's open world and harsh enemies.
“Everything is designed to kill you,” Miyazaki says, “The level design, as well as the enemy placements, everything has been arranged to kill you. But you can actually use those to your advantage as well.”
It's vital that you monitor enemy patterns and you'll need to separate enemies to have any chance. For example, going up against two Knights is an almost impossible task, as is taking on a Stone Dragon but you can lure enemies into the giant lizard's flaming breath, saving you a lot of effort in the process.
The producer playing the game during the demo left two Knights in a lower room and climbed up to a rooftop instead (you can go anywhere you can see), only to be destroyed by a black monster.
“This enemy is tougher than any you have seen in the previous two installments,” Miyazaki notes.
“We will be deepening the features attached to each weapon,” Miyazaki continues through his translator. “That will widen the range of the tactical options that the player has during a battle and the role-playing elements of the game.”
“The player character moves faster than the previous two installments and can be controlled more intuitively,” he continues. “There are a lot of tough situations waiting for players but at the same time we’re offering reasonable solutions, [such as] this faster moving character control system.”
Whether or not Dark Souls 3 can recapture the famous toughness of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls – which most felt was at least partly lost in Dark Souls 2 – remains to be seen as improved movement and abilities will need to be balanced against more difficult enemies.
Dark Souls 3 was officially announced last week at E3 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One and is reportedly the "final" entry in the Souls series. The game is set to launch in early 2016.
