Some details for Sony’s upcoming Project Morpheus headset have leaked online.
As of this writing, this listing for the headset is no longer live. The headset was priced at 399 euros, or roughly $ 450, and projects a Q2 2016 release date.
So, this could entirely be speculation on the retailer’s part, but the listing coming up a few days before E3 seems particularly portentous. We already know that Valve and Oculus VR are releasing their consumer VR headsets soon, and before Morpheus even gets released, it will be a crowded market quite rapidly.
Sony has an edge over their competitors thanks to PlayStation 4. It’s the market leader for home consoles, Sony has nabbed contracts for most multiplatform games and developers, and it’s popular among gamers. Convincing those same gamers to spend more than their already expensive console to buy VR may prove a harder sell, but again, compared to their competitors, Sony has better prospects for these reasons.
Of course, having said all that, introducing a new product category will still be a tricky proposition, and only their more affluent customers will be able and willing to come into this as launch buyers. It certainly does not help that PlayStation accessories have generally had poor to average reception, from the Move controllers to Pottermore.
