Valve has revealed the big thing that has led to them occupying a larger presence in this year’s GDC: SteamVR.
On Steam’s new Steam Universe page, they have announced that they will have demos of the new Steam Controller, ‘living room devices’, and a new SteamVR hardware system. On the same page they call out for VR content creators and include a signup sheet.
Valve has been planning SteamVR for a long time, but this is the first time the public will see their hardware. Previously, it seemed that Valve was content with shelving their VR hardware plans, to support Oculus Rift. They shared resources with Oculus Rift, helped design Crystal Cove, and, of course, even had an open beta for the SteamVR SDK on the device.
As we all know, Oculus VR was then acquired by Facebook. That purchase changed the company from a promising crowdfunded startup to a 2 billion dollar company with a well-established backer.
It would seem that Valve interpreted this move as an opening for them to unveil their VR tech after all, and this is truly cause for excitement. Insiders were leaking details on the device, with someone going so far as to say that SteamVR blew Oculus Rift away.
