Destiny’s Weekly Heroic Strikes to Get Matchmaking

February 20, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Matchmaking is coming to Destiny’s Weekly Heroic Strikes.

There’s fewer players now in Destiny than there’s ever been, and its developers at Bungie are cognizant of this problem, which has the potential to make Weekly Heroic Strikes an incredible chore to get through. To that end, they are adding matchmaking for the Weekly Heroic Strike so players don’t need friends to be online to embark upon it.

The new matchmaking system is being implemented as a part of the game’s upcoming 1.1.1 patch, according to the Bungie Weekly Update. It’s still expected at the end of the month.

“We wanted the Weekly Heroics to be a challenge that pushed you and your buddies, but what we observed was that these strikes don’t demand the same cooperation of a cohesive pre-made group,” design lead M.E. Chung said.

“The overwhelming community response was such that many players didn’t have the numbers on their friends list to experience the activity on a weekly basis.”

Unfortunately, due to this change, you’ll no longer be able to solo the Weekly Heroic. Instead, you’ll be matched up with other players. Not a bad trade. Nightfall missions, which send you back into orbit upon a party wipe, will still require a pre-formed fireteam.

Here’s what else is coming:

  • Xûr will stop forgetting to bring his Exotic engrams when he visits us from… wherever Xûr is from.
  • Iron Banner will work as previously promised, with a greater variety of maps in rotation as well as a couple of new Bounties that give you more control over which weapon you can use to complete them – and we were hoping that one would have arrived before the current event.
  • Strikes and Crucible Maps will be less likely to repeat themselves when you stay in a matchmaking playlist with your Fireteam.
  • Grimoire Cards will drop when you expect them to.

In addition to the weapons rebalancing that the game will see and a new UI for the game’s reputation system, this looks like the biggest patch for Destiny yet.
