Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford, the maker of such games as Borderlands and the upcoming Homeworld Remaster says that developers need to take more risks with their titles in order to move forward.
The developer shared his view of games in a recent interview with The Bonus Round, where he talked about how games need to take more risks if developers wish to push the medium ahead.
"The oldest problem our species has faced is that we can't realize and manifest everything that we can imagine as quickly as we can imagine it," Pitchford said (via GameSpot). "So the only solution to that problem is to make choices. And to pick one thing and abandon another. And that can be difficult if there's a part of our minds that loves the thing that must be abandoned and is afraid of the new frontier that should be embraced."
"But progress demands that we look forward," he added. "And the biggest and most exciting things that we're going to do be doing in interactive entertainment in the future are things that we can't even conceive of today. And we'll never get there unless we actually are comfortable taking some risks and trying things we haven't done before."
Pitchford made his comments after the show’s host Geoff Keighley suggested that VR tech like Oculus Rift could become the next big thing in games. Pitchford responded that he wouldn’t like to see VR sweep over the industry just yet, as he’s “still trying to figure out how to make games with the medium we have.”
