Rockstar Games has revealed that Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold more than 45 million units, putting it in the list of the biggest bestseller games of all time.
The game reached this milestone mostly on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with 10 million units out of it coming from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. The title is slated to move only upwards, with a PC release coming this March 24, 2015.
Rockstar did not indicate the amount of repeat buyers who upgraded from their 7th to 8th generation consoles, but if we assume all copies were repeats, then there could at least be 35 million unique customers for the game.
Aside from the PC port, Rockstar has plans to extend the lifetime and profitability of Grand Theft Auto 5, with Grand Theft Auto Online, a persistent game that comes along with 5, and features microtransactions. Rockstar will also be releasing Grand Theft Auto Online Heists on all platforms, an expansion that will give players the chance for coop by executing multi tier heists.
In terms of bestselling games, Grand Theft Auto 5 still has a long way to go to match the sales of EA’s 2006 version of Tetris, which sold 100 million copies out of 2010, across PS3, PSP, and mobile platforms. It is likely that the game has overtaken Super Mario Bros, which held a record of over 40 million units at 2006, but notWii Sports, which is at 82.54 million units since December 2014.
