Ermac is now the fourteenth revealed fighter for Mortal Kombat X.
Ermac, although somewhat obscure, is one of the most powerful characters in the Mortal Kombat universe. Much like Street Fighter’sGouken, Ermac started out as an urban legend, a fabrication by fans that started from actual game elements. In this case, it was an audit menu listing as well as a supposed glitch that didn’t actually exist. In both cases, EGM helped perpetuate the myth, but unlike Capcom, Midway ran with it and made the character real.
The canon Ermac is Shao Kahn’s enforcer, made from the wills of an innumerable number of warrior soles. In the original timeline (Mortal Kombat 1 to 8), Ermac would eventually separate from Kahn and join forces with Liu Kang and his friend in defending Earthrealm. The most recent game is an alternate timeline, where he proves to be a major villain, destroying Jax’s arms, and throwing Stryker down a stairwell. His ending revealed that one of the souls in this version of Ermac is King Jerrod, Sindel’s husband and Kitana’s father.
The new game is again an entirely new timeline, so we have yet to see what role Ermac will play in this game, but if this trailer is any indication, he definitely starts off as he always does, as Kahn’s overpowered enforcer.
Mortal Kombat X will be released on April 14 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows.
