The Dark Souls modding community is a strong one, but there are moments where we wonder what's going on in the head of publishers like Namco Bandai, who recently filed a DMCA complaint against that same community. This has struck us all as a bit of an oddity, considering that modifications are generally seen as free downloadable content, making the overarching game experience stronger as a result.
One modder, who hosted his game-altering modification through cloud-sharing service Dropbox, was on the receiving end of this complaint. This modder's username is Durante, and they proceeded to very hastily remove the modification from circulation as soon as the complaint was filed.
Namco Bandai's argument was that the modification changes coding from the original Dark Souls, which Durante contests is not true. His code merely integrates into the code provided by From Software's development.
As it turns out, this complaint was actually filed in error. Considering that this modification actually helped Dark Souls run more smoothly, we were a bit surprised to hear that Namco Bandai was actually pursuing litigation against the modder. The fact that the complaint was ever filed is a bit strange, considering that Dark Souls is now an aging game. Dark Souls 2 has been out for some time now, and many gamers have already made the move over.
While the modification remains down at the moment, we're expecting that Durante will be publishing it once again very soon. Though, it's possible they will wait until the controversy has died down a bit more.
