Sony Looks Back at its Gaming Legacy to Celebrate PlayStation’s 20th Birthday

November 13, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Notable exclusives like Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, and Jak and Daxter didn’t make the cut.

Sony has launched its celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the original PlayStation's Japanese release a month early, with a new video looking back at the past 20 years of major titles from Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid to Knack and The Last of Us.

The first PlayStation was released on December 3rd, 1994 in Japan and went on to be the most successful console of all time until its successor, the PlayStation 2, overtook. The PS2 still holds the record, with more than 150 million sold during its life cycle compared to 120 million for the PlayStation and 80 million for the PS3.

According to the latest from Sony, 13.5 million PS4s have been sold since the console was released a year ago.

The PlayStation launched on September 9th, 1995 in North America, September 29th in Europe, November 15th in Australia, and Korea finally got the PlayStation in 1996.
