Mighty No. 9 Hero Gets a Slight Makeover

November 10, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Beck now sports bright white armor, while Call gets a new weapon.

Have you gotten used to the not-Mega Man protagonist of Mighty No. 9 yet? The spunky Beck resembles his Blue Bomber cousin in several ways, though his design is unique enough to barely avoid being a complete clone. It seems that developers comcept and Inti Creates have decided to tweak his design even more so that Beck may further stand out.

As you can see in the recently revealed box art above, Beck's armor is now a bright white. Director Koji Imaeda explained the change in the game's latest update:

From the very beginning we designed Beck to have a neutral, grey base, with the idea of wanting to make something completely new and unique.

But development soldiered on, and as we approached the last leg, we started looking closer at Beck. As a protagonist that could absorb the abilities of his siblings and take on various forms, our image of his appropriate color shifted from "neutrality" to "containing all possibilities"… and since white is a combination of all colors of light, we felt that would actually suit his character better! Hence, we went with the coloring change.

Beck isn't the only one rocking new gear — his partner and second playable character Call has a new weapon! There was a survey to decide which weapon Call would wield in battle, and voters decided on a candy cane-patterned laser bow. The three other options were just variations on a standard blaster, so this bow ought to be a nice change of pace from the familiar.

Mighty No. 9 is on track for release in 2015 for Windows, Mac, Linux, Wii U, 3DS, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
