Bungie is already working on the next full game release under the Destiny IP.
Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg shared this revelation during Tuesday’s earnings call. They also revealed that the game’s registered player base is now at 9.5 million, and is one of the highest video game launches in the US and the UK.
Although this next release is already being worked on, Bungie is still committed to DLC for the first game, including The Dark Below, coming December 9, and The House of Wolves. It’s likely that much of the DLC is completely or partly finished, while the next release is only in the initial stages of development.
In fact, it might not even be a sequel or prequel, but a spinoff game under a different genre using the same IP. Note that Activision was careful not to actually use the word sequel in their communication to investors. Other AAAs are already exploring the idea of spinoffs to help extend the popularity of their IPs, and Activision and Bungie would not be beyond trying this. For example, Activision could make an interactive fiction game to help explore the lore of the game, or a MOBA or MMO where you play characters other than the Ghosts.
