A lot retro-styled games attempt to emulate home console graphics, but you don't see many that look like old handheld games. The Joylancer: Legendary Motor Knight by alpha six productions tips its hat to the Game Boy Color era, although the on-screen action goes well beyond what the GBC was ever capable of. It reminds me of Noitu Love 2 more than anything else.
In Joylancer, you play a young knight named Joy who wields a motorized lance (I don't know how you go about motorizing a lance, but whatever) and wishes to prove herself the greatest warrior in the Motor Knight Academy. Nice and simple, but it works! If it works for you too, then you might want to get in on the game's Early Access — Steam will make Joylancer available for $10 in November.
In the meantime, would you like to check out the Windows-only demo? Score it from the Joylancer homepage.
