Report: Sony, Microsoft Pressuring Developers to Lock PC Games at 30 FPS

October 15, 2014 by Jacob Saylor

It appears that all of the recent controversy over games and their respective FPS counts may not be unwarranted.

The great debate is about to get a little more heated. There are advocates on both sides of the 'frames per second' argument, but regardless of who is right in that arena, there's no doubt concerning one thing: it takes more power to achieve 60 FPS than it does 30. Of course, there's then the discussion of what kind of graphics you're able to put out once you've adjusted the game or system to run at 60 instead of 30, but that's besides the point.

At a recent school presentation, Ubisoft let something slip that could ignite the flames of war on social media across the internet. During this presentation, it was implied that console makers are pressuring developers to make games for PC at 30 FPS rather than 60. This is presumably because technology the of today's PC is moving forward much faster than that of consoles. While it might cost a bit more to get a nice computer, that's a choice that people have had. It opens up a number of doors unavailable on consoles and the same is true vice versa, so it's a bit scary to us that big names like Sony and Microsoft might be trying to squelch any opposition.

Here's what's been reported, taken from Guru 3D: "The Game Architect said that they aim for 60 fps but due to 'limitations', they have to settle for 30 fps in recent games. He then implied that console makers are pressuring them into doing the same thing on PC."

While we aren't looking at this as concrete proof of what was said, it does appear that there was a presentation and Ubisoft were the ones giving it. A picture taken at the event validates all of that information. Take a look below:

On what side of the fence do you stand in this debate? Whether you're for 30 FPS or 60 FPS, one thing is certain: we can't have console makers bullying the guys who are making the games we love. There's too much at stake in that scenario.
