Graywalkers Purgatory Returns To Kickstarter To Find A Community For This Turn Based RPG

September 25, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

After the recent success of Wasteland 2, chances are good that it will find that community.

Dreamlords Digital have relaunched their Kickstarter for Graywalkers Purgatory, a new turn based RPG in the vein of XCOM, and sporting a post apocalyptic cyberpunk theme.

The post apocalyptic event that precipitates the creation of the Graywalkers world is the Rupture, a cataclysm that has put together the realms of Earth, heaven, and hell. A land mass dubbed Purgatory is formed in the fallout, which is immediately settled and becomes a safe haven for normal people. After twenty years, Hell learns of Purgatory’s existence, and now the human race has to defend their new home.

Graywalkers Purgatory promises dynamic emergent gameplay, wherein your actions can actually change the world you play in. You will be able to recruit 36 out of 40 Graywalkers, each with their own special abilities. Manage resources, including tech, magic, and people, not only in combat, but to survive the everyday world. There will be a procedurally generated Freeform mode aside from the story based Campaign mode.

Since they last tried Kickstarter, Dreamlords has continued development of the game, and now have a playable alpha. They have also been in talks with investors, and paying for the development on their own, so they are not necessarily dependent on crowdfunding.

However, they recognized the value of Kickstarter as a platform to build a community around, as well as a way to raise awareness and hype for new games. Dreamlords is up front about using the interest they generate on Kickstarter in negotiations with investors, regardless if they reach their goal or not.

Dreamlords is looking to bring Graywalkers Purgatory to PC, to as many operating systems as possible (Windows, Mac, and Linux) and in as many platforms as possible, including Steam, GOGcom, Desura, and more. If possible, they may also bring the game to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Ouya, and iOS 7/Kitkat tablets.

After the recent success of Wasteland 2, Dreamlords may benefit from the immediate precedent. They are only asking for $ 40,000, a fraction of the $ 900,000 inXile needed for Wasteland 2. Even if Graywalkers Purgatory may end up not having Wasteland 2's polish and production values, the market for a turn based RPG done right has proven to be there.

Dreamlords promises to release a playable demo of Graywalkers Purgatory in a few days. In the meantime, check out the Kickstarter pitch below and fund the game here.
