If you've never watched Indie Game: The Movie, you owe it to yourself to track it down — it's currently on Netflix too if you subscribe to that service. It's one thing to read up on interviews and behind-the-scenes content regarding projects from the big developers and publishers, but seeing the process from an indie's perspective teaches you just how brutal being a game maker can be. These are the people who are in this business for the love, not so much the money, and any opportunity to learn about their struggles and triumphs should be taken.
Thus, I direct you to GameLoading: Rise of the Indies, a new documentary that has been in the works for about two years now and has touched base with people like lead Minecraft developer Jens Bergensten, Ouya co-founder Kellee Santiago, Guacamelee! studio DrinkBox, and more. After a successful Kickstarter campaign last year, the filmmaking duo of Lester Francois and Anna Brady were able to visit several locations like Penny Arcade Expo and BitSummit in order to complete principal photography. Now it's time to piece the footage together, which has lead to one last Kickstarter for the sake of theatrical sound mixing, professional color grading, and covering overhead fees.
The final campaign, which asks for $50,000, will run until October 22. Should everything go according to plan, the final film will be ready by March 2015. If you are interested in learning more about the strength of the indie gaming community, consider backing this documentary.
