The game is literally an open sandbox and nothing more. You get free rein to bring items into your game and do with them what you want. It does feature two guns, the Physics Gun and Tool Gun, giving you unrealistic but entertaining ways to control those items. Another popular use of the game is to play around with its ragdoll physics, which is based on a modified version of Source's Havok engine.
Garry’s Mod has been around since 2006, originating as a Half-Life 2 Mod. However, sales have jumped in recent years, no doubt due to the release of a standalone version.
To put this in perspective, it sold its first million only in 2011, and earned $ 22 million last year.

Over 6 million copies were sold on Windows alone, but the game also sold 336,765 copies on Mac and 28,322 copies on Linux. Perhaps this latter statistic will jump when SteamOS finally gets released.
Garry may not be becoming a billionaire anytime soon, but between Garry’s Mod, Rust, and Riftlight, Facepunch Studios is doing very well.
