You'd be forgiven for thinking that Square Enix is just a Final Fantasy / Dragon Quest factory lately, with maybe a Kingdom Hearts here or there. Even when it publishes pleasant surprises like the critically acclaimed Bravely Default, main development duties are handed off to third-party studios. Don't you miss the old days when these guys went for broke on risky new projects, like Secret of Mana or Brave Fencer Musashi?
It looks like Square Enix is ready to take a chance at experimentation once again with the formation of a new, unnamed studio that will work on console RPGs. Japanese outlet Inside Games, as interpreted by Siliconera, sheds light on this latest venture, which has opened a recruitment page to fill key positions, such as battle and event planners, programmers, technical artists, menu designers, and more. Anyone hoping to jump aboard the train has until the September 30 deadline to apply.
There's a message posted on the page that reads:
We went through all kinds of adventures back when we were children. Now that we’re adults, what kind of new stories can we come up with?
Does this mean that Square Enix is serious about going "back to its roots," so to speak? Are we about to bear witness to the birth of the next Chrono Trigger? We can only hope!
