Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are coming to PC via Steam.
Hideo Kojima himself took to the Twitch stream to confirm this news, but revealed no further details. Some speculate that Ground Zeroes will be released again first, but I dare say if they have only started work on this now, they may as well be planning to bundle the two for Steam owners. While Ground Zeroes was an undisputed hit and has a lot of defenders, there is no doubt Konami, and Kojima himself, took a hit to their reputations from the game as well, with the controversy that grew around the game’s price and length.
The other point of interest, of course, and considering how the Playstation 4 has been hyped as the best looking version of the game until now, is if this Steam version will run in 4K. Steam in general is not for everyone, but there is a sizable enough fanbase on Steam to contend with for Sony and Microsoft. Who knows? Maybe PC was lead platform all along.
If they do not go with 4K for this one, it may or may not be another strike against Konami again. It’s become pretty clear in recent months that in spite of the adulation around Kojima, the fans will not turn a blind eye to things they find questionable, unfair, sexist, etc.
We don’t know when it is coming to Steam, butMetal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, and Playstation 4 in the 1st quarter of 2015.
