2K Sports has unveiled an interesting addition to the WWE 2K15 roster in today’s press release. CM Punk is confirmed part of the game, and he will be featured, for his rivalry with John Cena, in the game’s new 2K Showcase mode.
The 2K in the 2K Showcase name seems to imply that they are focusing on feuds from the 2000s onward. This is supported by the other feud featured in this press release being that between Triple H and The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels. The Punk-Cena feud in focus today occurred between 2011 to 2013, while the Triple H – Shawn Michaels feud comes from the years 2002 to 2004.
The 2K Showcase feature will include WWE’s requisite documentary style video packages, cinematic cutscenes, and actual commentary from the wrestlers. There will be 33 matches on offer, with new superstars, championships and ring attire unlockable from playing them. More 2K Showcase rivalries will be available for download in the future starting October 28.
Of course, the real news here is CM Punk’s involvement in the video game. For those not in the know, Punk famously left the WWE abruptly this January, and the company has allowed his contract to expire. While both parties are cagey as to the details of the split, Punk’s career, health, and direction in the company appeared to be factors.
WWE has been more conciliatory towards wrestlers they have not split amicably with in recent years, so perhaps this is a sign Punk and the WWE will at least work together in some capacity. For the record, since Punk’s contract expired they have been featuring his matches on their programming again.
If Punk really is not coming back to WWE, or wrestling, than the next best thing fans can do is chart out what would have been his career on games like WWE 2K15, and we are sure they are itching for the chance.
WWE 2K15 is coming October 28 to Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
