How much did you like the Halo 5 Guardians beta preview? You don’t have to wait for that beta to get a taste of it today.
Introducing Arena 5117, a new fanmade map for Halo 4. As you can see in the reveal trailer, the map’s creators, Darth Quackers and GavinKnight, took pains to recreate what we saw in the preview, and then fill in the gaps to make a pretty decent multiplayer map.
So, they tried to recreate what we saw of the map from the brief glimpses shown in the trailer, and then took a freestyle approach to the open area itself. As you may imagine from seeing it, the map plays really good, and hearkens to arena shooters of old.
The map is fast paced and ideal as a Quake style arena map. You need to be constantly on your toes, as even the respawn points are found in the middle of the map. It also does a good job of recreating the feel of the trailer, including the feeling that you are floating in space the hole time.
Darth Quackers and GavinKnight created a Game Type to go with the map, called Arena Slayer. Again, they looked at what we saw in the trailer and sought to replicate the apparent limitations from there. So, for example, the only armor ability is the thruster pack. It also allows for two (only two) weapons to spawn in the map. The Shotgun and Concussion Rifle will show up at opposite ends of Arena 5117, so that players who manage to get their hands on both will need to work their way to a confrontation.
