The Division: Fan Video Imagines The Smartwatch In Real Life

July 19, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

By all means, this should not really be possible IRL, but who am I to spoil the fun?

You have seen gameplay and trailers for Tom Clancy’s The Division, right? Do you ever wonder what it would be like to have a Smartwatch like the Division agents have? We have a little fan video teasing that possibility.

First off, let’s talk about those Smartwatches. These aren’t quite the same smartwatch wearables available from the market today from the likes of Samsung. In a sense, the idea is a bit of a throwback; much like Dick Tracy’s 2-way wrist TV made people imagine the improbable, this smartwatch creates holographic images, to display maps and information screens, but mostly to serve as the HUD for the player.

Holographs have been associated with computing since the days of the first Tron movie, but of course, we don’t really use holographs to interact with computers. If you knew about the requirements in displaying holographs, you would also know that it is not really possible to use holographs in this way. But hey, video games are fiction.

This short video shows a random white guy suddenly looking at his watch glowing, but it sure as hell is not an Omnitrix. The Smartwatch reverts to displaying the initial menu, before filling the room with a map. And then, faking reality, somehow touching the map causes the room to black out, with the implication that the guy was teleported? The video promises a part 2 at the end, so maybe we can get an explanation then of how the watch picked up an ability that isn’t in the game.

Enough nitpicking though, it’s OK for what it is. You can check it out below. Tom Clancy’s The Division is coming to Windows, Playstation 4, and Xbox One on 2015.
