Square Enix is hard at work on the next major Dragon Quest; meanwhile, Dragon Quest X still hasn't seen a Western release. The MMORPG was originally released on the Wii in 2012, with ports to Wii U, Windows, and Android phones coming the following year, all exclusive to Japan. Now comes news that yet another port is on its way on September 4, this time for the 3DS. And once again, it's for Japan only.
What's peculiar about this new version is that, despite the existence of a retail package, it won't run natively on 3DS hardware. Like the Android port, it will be streamed from a server, similar to the OnLive or upcoming PlayStation Now services. On the upside, it will interact with the other versions and appears to be graphically comparable to the Wii U and PC builds. On the downside, extra functions that exist on Wii U controllers and not on the 3DS, namely the ZL and ZR buttons and the R stick, will have to be mapped onto the touchscreen. Hopefully this game will see compatibility with the Circle Pad Pro to alleviate that issue. If you do buy the retail box, though, you'll receive a 60-day free trial subscription and a host of special in-game items, including a "Yellow Slim Board Prism" vehicle, which looks like a Segway with a face.
Of course, none of this means much of anything for us in the States. Let's pray that Square Enix decides to bring this game (and possibly the recent 3DS remake of Dragon Quest VII) out West in the near future.
