Sony is now making a profit on every PlayStation 4 sold, CEO Kaz Hirai has revealed in a corporate strategy meeting.
This is a remarkable turnaround for Sony which did not generate a profit on PS3 sales until 2009 and comes after the firm predicted last September that the hardware itself would be sold at a loss.
Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito said the company believed a single game purchase and PlayStation Plus subscription would be needed in order for Sony to turn a profit but it appears that this is no longer the case.
Hirai commented during the meeting that Sony believes the PS4 will be more profitable than the PS2, the best selling console of all time, thanks to network services.
"Approximately half" of all PS4 owners have a Plus account, Hirai revealed. Seven million PS4s had been sold by April 6th meaning at least 3.5 million system owners have a Plus subscription.
Even on the cheapest (12 month) subscription option, Sony is generating $19.53 million per month from Plus on PS4.
Despite the PS4's success, Sony expects to record a net loss of $490 million this fiscal year.
