Metroidvanias are a dime a dozen in the indie space, especially among the crowdfunding crowd. However, what if I told you there’s a new Kickstarter out there for a Metroidvania in an HP Lovecraft universe? And what if you played the tentacle monster? Introducing Mark Of The Old Ones.
Like I explained, Mark Of The Old Ones has you playing Mogal, a multiequipped octopuslike purple cave explorer, exploring a 2.5D physics platforming world. It’s almost whimsical, but Mogal doesn’t just skulk slowly across the floor for dramatic effect. No, it unabashedly uses its tendrils to push off the floor, cling onto ceilings, swing Tarzan style, etc.
Mogal has a springlike quality, expanding and compressing with every movement. As you can imagine, depending on your movement you can build momentum. With the addition of abilities like magnetism, boost, and chronition, you become more and better equipped to explore Namaset’s deep caverns to seek out Kraal. Chronition may be the ScrewAttack of MotOO; your viewing radius increases, you light up the caverns, and you can even slow time.
Mark of the Old Ones is already on its 2nd run in Kickstarter. Thankfully, developer Hit The Sticks spent the time in between shaving two months development time, so now, they are less likely to fail, and they’re asking for less money, down to $ 46,000. If it gets funded, the game is coming to 64-bit computers for Windows, OS X, and Linux, with Ubuntu squarely in focus. They have an interest in Steam and PS4, but cannot make promises at this time.
So, who wants to Metroidvania around as the tentacle creature? You can check out the Kickstarter pitch below and help fund it here.
