A recently leaked internal document from Square Enix got both Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts fans keyed up for the remainder of 2014. Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3, which were shown at Sony’s 2013 E3 press conference, both saw 2014 release dates on this official list, but the publisher has come out to shut down everyone’s hopes and dreams. GameZone has received an email from Square saying that these dates were nothing more than placeholders.
"We're aware an internal document has been in circulation listing release dates for select Square Enix titles. This information contained in this document is inaccurate and features placeholder timing," the email reads. "Specifically – no announcement has been made to date for Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy 15 – their projected release window remains to be advised.”
Final Fantasy 15 has been in development for quite some time. The massive RPG started as the elusive Final Fantasy Versus 13, being reworked into a proper numbered, next-generation experience. It’s likely that we’ll see that one launch before the end of the year, but Kingdom Hearts 3 was said to be very early in development when it was first shown. The short demo didn’t give us much from the sequel, so fans might want to hold off enthusiasm at this time.
Even if 2015 is a more reasonable date for Kingdom Hearts 3, fans are still going to spend the rest of the year asking for particular features to be added to the game. It’s a project with a dedicated audience, so look to see Square Enix post new pieces of media in the coming months.
