We have a rumor that Sony is working on a VR headset for the Playstation 4. Not the HMZ-T3, the actual VR headset that will be Sony’s answer to the Oculus Rift.
Our source is someone intimately familiar with the Oculus Rift, known beta tester TheSonicReblog. He says that the devs got to try Super Stardust on the VR headset, and that it is definitely different technology from the HMZ-T3.
I’m no insider, but I did get to try out the HMZ-T3 headset personally, and as a personal 3D viewer, it’s something some consumers will be interested in, but not a compelling buy for the public at large. I am genuinely curious if there is enough of a market for it.
Moving on, Sony has apparently been working on their VR tech for quite a while. They are happy to see VR seems ready to finally take off, but they are mostly interested in the future of their own headset. This part of the rumor does not seem that farfetched at all, since we know Sony’s devs still have a lot of leeway when it comes to exploratory technology and used to have more.
Of course, we had been hearing whispers about the headset since last year, and some people even found patent filings, but it is telling that Sony has yet to reveal it to the public. If it does exist, are they still at work iterating it? Or could they be possibly working at making it cheaper? Whatever the case is, Sony cannot afford to be last in the technological finish line again.
