The announcement of PlayStation Now, Sony’s subscription-based streaming service, might have lowered brick-and-mortar retailer GameStop’s share prices, but that doesn’t mean the company wants nothing to do with Sony’s backwards compatibility solution. Instead, a senior public relations director has told GameSpot that the Grapevine, Texas company would like to stock and sell memberships to PlayStation Now in its stores.
It worked with PlayStation Plus cards, and GameStop is hoping it’ll work with Sony’s latest venture.
"GameStop has built a $600MM digital business, with most of the digital games sold through our stores the representative said. “Similar to how we worked closely with our partner Sony to successfully sell the PlayStation Plus service, we are looking forward to working with them on including the new PlayStation Now service as part of our portfolio of gaming products we offer our customers.”
Currently, it’s unknown just how Sony will be dolling out subscriptions for PlayStation Now, or what the pricing structure will actually look like. The closed beta is expected to start at the end of the month, with the actual paid service arriving during the hot summer months.
