Sony Opens Up Crossplay Support For All Developers

October 3, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

You will soon get a chance to enjoy crossplay on a variety of games.

Crossplay is something that’s been available for a little while now, but the PlayStation 4 platform has been lacking. It was something considered to be in beta allowing for select video game titles to enjoy crossplay, but now the service feature is finally opening up for developers to have access with. Now it won’t matter what console or platform you enjoy video game titles with as you can soon enjoy gameplay with friends who may be running a game on a competitor console system. This announcement came from the Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, while he was speaking with Wired.

Again, for those of you who may not be familiar with crossplay, this is a feature that would allow players to join together online for gameplay regardless of the platform you may own the title on. PlayStation 4 users will be able to play with PC or even Xbox One players. There’s a good variety of titles that supported it during the beta like Rocket League, but because this beta has ended, there would be a plethora of video games released already with the support tacked on.

The track record of the incumbent platform winning the next time around is not a great one. So the major thrust of my executive energy is to avoid complacency.

One of the reasons that Sony is opting to bring in crossplay is to avoid complacency. Essentially, this is a move to be on the good graces of the players and with the end of the console lifecycle upon us, both Microsoft and Sony would likely want to win the popular vote for their upcoming next-generation reveal. Of course that is out of speculation, but this could be a momentum push to swing rally players towards the platform name before the next console launch hits the market.
