Dead Rising 3 is Like Uncharted with Zombies

October 4, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

The hand-crafted nature of Capcom’s Dead Rising 3 will make it feel like linear blockbuster set in an open world.

Dead Rising 3 will be much bigger than anything else Capcom has ever attempted with the series. The zombie-slicing titles have always been expansive, but the work being done on the Xbox One pushes well beyond the boundaries of what’s been done before. Size and scope are great, but the fun doesn’t stop there for executive producer Josh Bridge and his team. Speaking with OXM, Bridge argues that every nook and cranny of the game is handcrafted and “fully unconstrained” – and that fact is something that players should be able to pick up on. If you need a comparison, think of an open-world Uncharted game where instead of searching for treasure, you’re fighting to keep your brain from being devoured.

"We kind of cram in the fidelity that you'd expect from a linear experience like Uncharted," senior producer Jason Leigh said. “We try and do it everywhere so regardless of the angle you're taking through the world, it feels like you're playing that kind of game. [Our design team] has essentially hand-crafted spaces. You're not going to come across a cookie-cutter sort of world."

It still has plenty of Japanese influences, but Dead Rising 3 has much grander ambitions than anything we’ve seen come out of Capcom in a long time. The recent gameplay videos show a detailed world that’s taking full advantage of Microsoft’s new hardware, and we won’t have to wait too long to see it in action. Dead Rising 3 will launch on Xbox One Nov. 22.
