Frictional Games, the Swedish gaming studio behind terrifying titles like Amnesia and Penumbra, has a new title in the works. A “transmission” has been sent that hints at a game called Soma, which looks to be a sci-fi, futuristic experience where some sort of research team finds a strange contraption during a salvage mission.
It’s difficult to tell too much about the game at this point, but the transmission does paint a grim picture for whoever is involved in the world. Take a look:
[begin text transmission]
Adding to the already explosive Mockingbird-situation, it is clear we need to take greater precaution. Isolate all systems to avoid data corruption and prevent hostile actions.
…
Keep an eye out for personality deviation. When able, always meet in person.
[end text transmission]
The message opens with “quarantine failure – crucial systems at risk” so don’t expect to enter a world full of happy citizens and little danger. Frictional is known to produce chilling, cerebral PC titles that push both timid and hardened players to the edge, and we can only hope that trend continues with Soma. The above live-action trailer adds a little more to the scene, showing an engineer examining a peculiar machine.
Expect to hear more about this PC experience in the coming weeks.
