DICE has made major upgrades to Battlelog for Battlefield 4, making it useful to keep the companion app open even while you’re playing the game.
At the onset, it has a notifications widget letting you know who among your friends are online, as well as what Missions are ongoing. Battlelog has also been added into the game itself as an overlay. This in-game overlay version of Battlelog is built on the same infrastructure as the mobile/web app, so parity should be 100 %.
When you do start playing the game, Battlelog will load a Unified Game Manager, giving you access to real-time Loadout, Remote Joining, and Battlescreen. Remote Joining will allow you to switch servers to play with friends right from Battlelog, and Battlescreen is a real-time interactive mini-map which allows you to set targets in-game. Switching to Commander Mode is a matter of a series of clicks or taps into another server, just as convenient as Remote Joining.
One feature that DICE hopes will encourage more play sessions is Geo Leaderboards, allowing you to see stats for players in your city, state, and country. This feature requires you share your location and is 100 % opt-in.
On the micro level, you can set Missions, challenges to share between you and a maximum of four friends. Missions are reset every round, and it will be easy to invite friends to try and reach Missions from Battlelog.
Of course, DICE claims to have tweaked stats further, but perhaps the most interesting addition to the game are Suggestions and Tracking. Much like in a social network, Suggestions will tell you what activities you can do in the game, such as medals to unlock, assignments, and all manner of objectives. Tracking one of these Suggestions allows you to keep tabs on it at any time.
Overall, Battlefield 4’s Battlelog is a fine addition to the game, not essential but definitely something you’ll want to make use of if you can.
