Riot Games has launched a new community platform for League of Legends, to better match the needs of the game’s active, boisterous community. The community is completely separate from the forums, and is up on beta for people with NA accounts.
Riot is particular about calling it a community, not a forum, and a platform, not a site. Rather than implement a familiar format by using some of the more established forum setups, like phpBB, Riot has built their own from the ground up. Fittingly enough, they have started an AMA of sorts using the same community so that fans can ask them questions.
The community is similar to Reddit. Threads can open into minithreads within, individual comments can be voted, and of course, Riot can easily remove posts and ban people.
Going through the AMA thread, Riot’s moltovocarrot addresses some general inquiries as well. Yes, they want to put avatars in but they’re not ready yet. Allowing fans to vote each other’s posts allows them to moderate themselves.
Looking at improvements made by the new system, the community has a Red Tracker that lets fans easily mark their favorite conversations, and Riot has instituted a robust search system that should make finding those interesting conversations even easier. There is also a public beta environment version of the entire community.
In the end, of course, League of Legends fans can still log on to complain about Katarina’s nerfs, teach beginners, and just talk shop about the game. Nothing about it is set in stone, and they’re open to suggestions, so if you’re an avid League of Legends player, go check it out and tell them what you think.
