Paranautical Activity On Steam Early Access

September 6, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Succesful Kickstarter doubly secures the future of the game’s development.

What a whirlwind relationship it has been for Code Avarice and Steam.  A month after getting rejected by Steam Greenlight and moving to Kickstarter, Paranautical Activity has been approved for Greenlight and has now come up on Steam Early Access.

This should not be that much of a surprise, though, since the game is already available for purchase and download, and the devs were  securing funding for the purpose of continuing development. As it turns out, Paranautical Activity’s Kickstarter campaign was a success after all, past the initial $ 10,000 goal and going as far as Oculus Rift support at $ 15,000. However, getting up on Greenlight occurred a few days before that, last August 28.

Code Avarice explained in their blog that they are going ahead with adding multiplayer co-op, since funding for further development for the game has been secured two ways. It is no coincidence that this was also a stretch goal on the Kickstarter campaign.

To bring you up to speed, Paranautical Activity was initially rejected on Steam after word came around that Adult Swim Games was interested in publishing the game. There was some miscommunication in this situation, which ended badly for the game as Adult Swim pulled out support shortly after Valve did.

In the process of launching their Kickstarter, the devs were very vocal about how they felt they were treated by Valve, and were propped up by hopes their fans would keep supporting the game.

I think Valve’s turnaround in this situation shows sincerity in trying to get their indie funding system to work. I did not want to put them in a bad light recounting all of this, but I did want to point out that getting Greenlight to work as intended is not as easy as it appears on the surface. We hope Valve can improve their system in short order, so that they can approve and start funding games easier and pay better attention to special cases like this.
